EMPORIA, KS- After several months of anticipation and planning, A1 Pump & Jet has opened operations at its new facility. As a service provider to major commercial food processing plants across the region, owners Judy and Ron McCoy are glad to be in their new space at 377 West US HWY 50 right outside of Emporia. A1 Pump & Jet offers a wide range of services to municipal, commercial, and governmental entities ranging from sludge hauling with land application, to sanitary sewer line cleaning, to grease disposal and recycling. Originally started in 2014, after McCoy had sold another trucking operation, the company consisted of two men and two used trucks.
As McCoy built the business, he began to research the need for hydro cleaning services with area meat packing facilities. After receiving a positive response, A1 Pump & Jet began to transition their focus to encompass commercial clients throughout the region. 2015 brought additional growth with the acquisition of farmland to conduct land application and a facility to store equipment. In 2016, A1 Pump & Jet landed their first governmental contract and continued to grow in this arena. By 2018, A1 Pump and Jet found itself working with the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, the National Parks Service, and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers.
“Wastewater services are critical for plants to be operable,” states McCoy. As the company continued to grow, the McCoys realized that an ownership restructuring would allow for additional opportunities with federal contracts. In 2017, A1 Pump & Jet transitioned to be a Women Owned business. The McCoys had always been owners of the business but could not qualify for this classification if Judy had another career. After 27 years as a respiratory therapist at Newman Regional Health, Judy McCoy decided to retire and move into a full-time management career at A1. Both owners are hands on with Ron focusing on production and sales and Judy overseeing the administrative operations and Human Resource functions of the company.
In 2019, the company was on track to grow again and a satellite office in Holcomb, Kansas was opened. This branch of the company primarily caters to meat packing facilities and provides several services to aid in operations. With their service footprint growing to a radius of 500 miles around Emporia, the McCoys knew it was time to increase their facility size. After two years of planning, A1 Pump & Jet is ready for businesses at their new location. Currently the company employs 15 full time positions and has over 20 trucks in their fleet.
During their planning period A1 worked with Emporia Main Street to identify alternative finance sources to expedite their business expansion.  A1 Pump and Jet is currently working with a series of state and local programs to add a significant amount of high paying jobs to the region.  Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods stated “A business like A1 is critical to facilitating the growth of other industries throughout the region, and their business model pulls in significant dollars from beyond our market trade area.  Ron and Judy McCoy are building quality jobs for area residents while simultaneously growing a superior business within their industry type.”
When asked what goals are for the future, Ron McCoy is looking to invest within the community.
“As we grow and develop our business, we look forward to being in Emporia and supporting the community as much as possible. We also hope to grow from 15 to 45 employees in the next 24 months,” McCoy explains.
A Grand Opening for A1 Pump & Jet will take place later this spring. For employment inquiries, please call 620-342-5100 or apply online at a1pumpjet.com
