Emporia Main Street is proud to have spearheaded the Veterans Banner Project, an initiative to decorate the downtown light posts with banners honoring current or former service members. From the beginning of the project in 2014, it was about much more than banners – it was about collecting, preserving, and sharing the personal stories of those who have bravely served their country. To continue honoring these heroes, Emporia Main Street worked to create a keepsake magazine of their stories, with proceeds donated to local Veterans Organizations. Additionally, each fall Emporia Main Street collects donated items for care packages to send to currently deployed service members.

Emporia Main Street has partnered with KVOE Radio to create Beyond the Banners magazine. Volume 1 of the magazine contains all the stories collected during the first 3 years of banner project, in a printed keepsake publication. Additional volumes are planned for the future.
