Sewer Project Updates 4/24

Work has begun on the City’s downtown sanitary sewer project and will continue until June 2020. The main project area is approximately South of 12th Avenue, East of Congress St., West of Union St., and North of the railroad tracks. Construction work will mostly be within the City’s alleys and some streets.

Adjacent parking lots and alleys will have restricted access when the contractor is in the immediate area.  Alley refuse services may be relocated and will be coordinated with Sanitation crews when necessary during construction. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic is asked to use caution while in the immediate area of the construction project. Updates will continue throughout the construction period to keep the public informed and safe. For further information please contact City of Emporia Engineering at 343-4260

Updated impact areas for the sewer lining project:

Current work areas include the alley between Merchant Street and Constitution Street in the 1100 Block.

From April 22nd-26th the alley between Commercial Street and Merchant Street in the 1100 Block, the alley between Merchant Street and Constitution Street in the 1000 Block, and the alley between Market Street and Mechanic Street in the 300 Block will be impacted.

From April 29- May 3rd, West 12th Avenue between Merchant Street and State Street will be impacted. During construction, traffic may be reduced to accommodate for machinery and crews working within the aforementioned areas.

This is a rehabilitation construction project of the existing sanitary sewer collection system.  This will include manhole improvements, main line repairs, interior lining of the main line, and service line connection repairs.

The contractor will be in each alley multiple times as the sequencing of the rehabilitation construction will require coordination to provide the best long-term improvements.  The typical work that the contractor will perform and will require multiple different times for work completion:

  1. Closed Caption Television “CCTV” (video) of the sanitary sewermains to determine the state of the existing main line and taps.
  2. Excavation for service tap repairs
  3. Excavation for main line repairs
  4. Lining of the sanitary sewermain line
  5. Pavement restoration and final clean up

This will require multiple set ups and work in each alley to perform the work in accordance to design and specification requirements.

City of Emporia – Downtown Sanitary Sewer Collection System Project

Dye Testing Assistance

The City of Emporia is currently in the evaluation process to design the maintenance of the sanitary sewer collection system in the Downtown Area of the City.  The sanitary sewer collection system (manholes and underground pipes) are mostly located in the alleys.

City staff, BG Consultants staff, and Mayer Specialty staff will be conducting a dye test to identify active and open sanitary sewer service lines in the project area.  They will be knocking on doors and asking for your assistance to flush a dye table down your sanitary drains so that a CCTV can identify the active lines in the system.

They will start work October 29th and plan to work two weeks, ending on November 9th.  We apologize in advance for any inconvenience, but this work is necessary to evaluate the active sanitary sewer lateral connections to the City’s sewer system.

An attached map shows the area to town that they plan on dye testing.  The general area is bordered by 12th Avenue to the North, 3rd Avenue (RR tracks) to the South, Congress Street to the West and Union Street to the East.

Please feel free to contact the City Engineer Office at 620-343-4260 or the Emporia Main Street Office at 620-340-6430 should you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your patience and assistance in this public infrastructure improvement project.
