Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow are excited to invite you and your family to their annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration in downtown Emporia!

std

The Dia de Los Muertos holiday, which is celebrated mostly in Mexico on November 1 and 2, is like a family reunion—except ancestors that have passed are the guests of honor. Day of the Dead is a joyful time that helps people remember the deceased and celebrate their memory.

Modern observances vary from region to region. In some rural areas, families adorn grave sites with candles, marigolds, and the favorite foods of deceased relatives in an attempt to persuade the loved ones to return for a family reunion. In urban areas, people take to the street for festive celebrations and indulge in the consumption of food and alcohol. Some wear wooden skull masks known as calacas. Many families build altars, called ofrendas, in their homes, using photos, candles, flowers, and food.

This event is a partnership between Hispanics of Today & Tomorrow (H.O.T.T.) and Emporia Main Street. Start the day off with the Dia De Los Muertos Parade at 10:30 am. The parade starts at 7th Avenue and runs North on Commercial Street to 11th Ave . After the parade, take part in the Emporia Main Street Downtown Trick or Treat and Costume Contest until 12:30 pm then head over to the celebration in the 800 & 900 blocks of Commercial Street. The event includes traditional music, food, and Dia de Los Muertos fun and Merchandise. Proceeds from this event go to educational funds to the local Hispanic community in the form of college scholarships. For more information on H.O.T.T. visit hottemporia.org.
